Biography of H.G. Śrīman Matsya Avatāra Prabhu

Direct disciple of Śrīla Prabhupāda — Diksha Guru within ISKCON

Matsya Avatāra dāsa, born in Ponsacco (Pisa) in 1945, is a philosopher, author, and spiritual teacher. For fifty years, he has dedicated his life to the study, practice, and transmission of Bhakti, bridging the timeless spiritual wisdom of India with the needs of modern humanity.

From an early age, he pursued a deep philosophical and existential search while establishing a successful career in design and entrepreneurship. The turning point of his life arrived in August 1976, when he first met His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, Founder-Ācārya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).

In Śrīla Prabhupāda, he recognized the spiritual master capable of bringing his quest to fulfillment: not merely a custodian of Vedic wisdom, but a soul in whom knowledge, purity, devotion, and divine service had become living reality.

In 1977, he received spiritual initiation from Śrīla Prabhupāda and was given the name Matsya Avatāra dāsa. From that moment onward, service to the spiritual master, the study of the Bhagavad-gītā, the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, and the Gauḍīya Vaishnava tradition, alongside the practice of sādhana-bhakti, became the center of his life.

This path gradually transformed every facet of his existence. Matsya Avatāra dāsa dedicated his home, his resources, and the skills developed throughout his professional career to the service of Krishna. The family home in Ponsacco became a place of worship and gathering for devotees, offered to the blossoming Vaishnava community and giving rise to the first farm-temple of Krishna consciousness in Italy, home also to its first cow. His own family embraced the path of Bhakti, actively participating in devotional service.

His artistic and architectural skills were likewise transformed into sevā. Beginning in the late 1970s, Matsya Avatāra dāsa dedicated his service to designing, building, and renovating altars and sacred spaces across numerous ISKCON temples, both in Italy and abroad. These included Nouvelle Māyāpur in France, the Bury Place temple in London, Radhadesh in Belgium, alongside other projects in France, South Africa, and the United States. Art, architectural design, and organizational ability were thus seamlessly devoted to the Deities, to the devotees, and to the mission of Śrīla Prabhupāda.

His artistic service to Bhakti found one of its highest expressions between 1989 and 1993, when he contributed to the creation of the Puṣpa-samādhi Mandir of Śrīla Prabhupāda in Śrīdhāma Māyāpur, India. His work encompassed various artistic and design elements, from the marble flooring to the dome mosaics, glazed terracotta works, and the śṛṅgāsana. It was a profoundly significant service, dedicated entirely to the glorification of the spiritual master who had transformed his life.

It was during these years that a new vision of sevā crystallized within him: to bring Bhakti into the spheres of culture, academia, and civil society, presenting the teachings of Śrīla Prabhupāda in a language capable of engaging Western seekers without compromising their authentic, sacred essence.

From this inspiration, the Centro Studi Bhaktivedanta was founded in 1995. Dedicated to Śrīla Prabhupāda, it is devoted to transmitting the teachings of the Brahma-Madhva-Gauḍīya Vaishnava tradition through study, research, education, and spiritual experience.

For Matsya Avatāra dāsa, knowledge cannot simply end with the intellectual acquisition of concepts: it must foster a transformation of consciousness, the refinement of character, and the ability to experience a deeper relationship with God, with all living beings, and with the world.

Over the course of fifty years, he has delivered more than 3,000 lectures, seminars, and educational workshops across Italy and abroad—spanning universities, cultural institutions, schools, hospitals, professional associations, correctional facilities, and institutional venues. His teachings focus on self-knowledge, the nature of consciousness, the psychology and philosophy of Yoga and Bhakti, relationships, inner freedom, the purpose of life, and the mystery of death and the immortality of the soul.

Since 2003, Matsya Avatāra dāsa has also served as an initiating spiritual master (dīkṣā-guru) within ISKCON, guiding disciples and aspirants along their spiritual journey while keeping faithfulness to Śrīla Prabhupāda and the disciplic succession at the heart of his teachings.

In 2012, Dev Sanskriti University in Haridwar, India, conferred upon him an honorary doctorate—Doctor Honoris Causa (Ph.D.) in Philosophy—in recognition of his contributions to the global dissemination of Vedic knowledge and values. In 2025, he received further recognition from the Swastivachanam Foundation – The Universal Association for Sanskrit, Yoga & Ayurveda in New Delhi for his dedication to transmitting the Indo-Vedic wisdom tradition.

Today, Matsya Avatāra dāsa continues his mission through the Centro Studi Bhaktivedanta, its Campus, and the Govardhan project, fostering a vision where study, sādhana, community living, harmony with nature, Yoga, Āyurveda, and devotional service unite to elevate consciousness and nurture the full realization of the individual.

Fifty years after his first meeting with Śrīla Prabhupāda, the guiding thread of his life remains unchanged: to receive spiritual knowledge, live it deeply, and share it as service.

A vision that Matsya Avatāra dāsa encapsulates in these words:

“Life is a journey, knowledge is the path, love is the destination.”
