Tribute to Śrīla Prabhupāda for Vyāsa-pūjā 2025 by Śrīman Matsya Avatāra Prabhu

Dearest Śrīla Prabhupāda,
Please accept my respectful obeisances at Your lotus feet.
Nama oṁ viṣṇu-pādāya kṛṣṇa-preṣṭhāya bhū-tale śrīmate bhaktivedānta svāmin iti nāmine.
Namaste sārasvate deve gaura-vāṇī-pracāriṇe nirviśeṣa-śūnyavādi-paścātya-deśa-tāriṇe.
Oṁ ajñāna-timirāndhasya jñānāñjana-śalākayā cakṣur unmilitaṁ yena tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ.
On this special day of Your Vyāsa-Pūjā 2025, I write to You with a heart full of gratitude for Your teachings and the divine light You brought into my life.
Before meeting You, eager yet lacking true spiritual direction, I was thirsty for truth, freedom, and love, but I did not know where to find pure water to quench that thirst.
It was You—through Your words, Your books, Your disciples, and Your works—who guided me to the pure source of Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
I still remember the first time I met Your Divine Grace and received Your merciful darśana: You encouraged me to chant the mahā-mantra, to study the Bhagavad-gītā As It Is, and to speak of it to everyone I met.
After that meeting, I purchased the McMillan edition of the Bhagavad-gītā and, as I read it, on every page I felt Your voice whispering to my consciousness.
Each verse expanded and illuminated the teachings You had conveyed to me, clearing my intellect like the morning sun dispels the mists of ignorance.
At that moment, I realized I had finally found the Guru my heart had been seeking for so long. Tears of joy ran down my face as I felt Your compassion embracing my soul.
I will never forget when, leaving Your darśana, I began chanting the mahā-mantra Hare Kṛṣṇa, just as You had asked me: in that simple chanting, I found the shelter I had been searching for.
It felt as if the burdens of daily worries melted away instantly, and I experienced a pure joy I had never known before.
In that instant, I perceived Your sacred presence, I felt that You were guiding me along the path of bhakti.
Perhaps because I received the mercy of meeting You in person and receiving such personal teachings from You, I feel You near me every day through the priceless treasure You left behind.
Your voice echoes in the classes given in temples and becomes a whisper in the chanting of the mahā-mantra; Your compassionate gaze seems to rest upon me from photographs that portray Your face, at times grave, at times adorned with a gentle smile, but always full of compassion; Your teachings speak to me from every page of Your books and from Your precious recorded conversations.
Thus, although You left this world many years ago, Your spiritual presence is now even more alive and tangible, and continues to illuminate my path—as well as that of millions of others.
Your extraordinary life is for me a powerful example of service and dedication.
You faced countless hardships to bring Kṛṣṇa consciousness to every continent.
I think of Your courage when, nearly seventy years old, You crossed the ocean alone on a cargo ship, with hardly any means, armed only with unshakable faith in Your Guru and the Holy Name.
That seemingly impossible journey inspires me every time I face obstacles along my spiritual path: it reminds me that with faith and determination, by the mercy of Guru and Kṛṣṇa, I too can overcome any storm.
Thanks to You, I do not walk a lonely path in the desert.
You founded ISKCON- International Society for Kṛṣṇa Consciousness- a great international spiritual family, where I find support, friendship, and inspiration. Every temple You opened is an oasis of peace and divine joy in this chaotic and violent world, and is one of Your immense gifts of mercy to a suffering humanity.
I am moved to think how many lives You have saved from despair, offering everyone a safe refuge at the feet of Kṛṣṇa.
I also wish to express my deepest gratitude for the teachings I have received from You regarding the spiritual guidance of my own life, and that of my family, my students, and—over the past decades—my disciples.
In an age where deranged ideologies are sweeping across the world, denying the sacredness of life and abandoning the holy principles of religion, generating disorder, conflict, and violence, Your teachings have been for me a constant beacon—a spiritual compass capable of orienting every decision, great or small.
You taught me to live in sobriety and truth, to cultivate relationships based on compassion and selfless love, and to care for those entrusted to me with firmness, while also offering them a coherent example of behavior and deep listening.
Every day, thanks to Your guidance, I am able to face the many perilous and complex challenges of this crucial historical passage with confidence and discernment, knowing that we are not alone, but sustained by the power of Your transcendental vision and the protection of Kṛṣṇa.
Your person emanates transcendental qualities that continue to guide and inspire me, even in this violent world.
Your countless divine virtues shine in Your life’s work, and I wish to recall a few that particularly stand out:
Mercy: You welcome everyone without distinction, offering all the opportunity to be spiritually reborn and rediscover the path to God, forgiving our mistakes and always encouraging us.
Wisdom: Your words and writings illuminate the deepest truths with crystalline simplicity; Your understanding of the scriptures and Your ability to transmit them have dispelled the darkness of ignorance from countless hearts.
Determination: You showed unwavering commitment to the mission entrusted to You by Your spiritual master; neither age, illness, nor cultural or economic barriers could stop You from spreading Kṛṣṇa's message.
Compassion: Your heart shares the pain of those who suffer and rejoices at every small spiritual step of a soul; You sacrificed all comfort to alleviate others' suffering, teaching the path of Vaiṣṇava bhakti.
Humility: Though revered by hundreds of thousands as a messenger of God, You always presented Yourself as a humble servant of Your Guru and of Kṛṣṇa, attributing every success solely to Their divine mercy.
Power to transform lives: Your love and example have the power to awaken devotion even in the hardest hearts; countless people, myself included, have left destructive habits and found a higher purpose thanks to Your teachings.
Purity: The transparency of Your life, untouched by material contamination, reflects Your complete devotion to Kṛṣṇa; this purity is felt in Your presence, beyond time and space, instilling peace and trust in all who approach You.
The virtues I have mentioned are but a few of the countless ones that shine within You like stars in the night sky.
They guide my steps and remind me of the ideal of divine love I aspire to.
In my small way, I try to cultivate at least a spark of Your radiant bhakti in my life, so I may serve You better in spreading Your teachings and, one day, become a disciple with whom You may be pleased.
There are no words sufficient to express my gratitude for all You have done and continue to do for me and for the whole world.
Deep in my heart I know that without Your mercy I would still be lost in the labyrinth of māyā; instead, thanks to You, I have found the highest goal of life and the joy of devotional service to the Divine Couple, Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa.
I promise that I will keep striving to apply Your teachings in my life and to share them with others, hoping to repay—at least in part—the immense debt of love I owe to You.
On this sacred day dedicated to You, I humbly offer this letter at Your lotus feet as a small token of my love and devotion, praying to remain always under Your protection and Your resplendent spiritual guidance.
Your grateful and devoted servant,
Matsya Avatāra Dāsa
