Guru-purnima: Recognizing and Honoring the Bhakti of the Guru Who Illuminates All Darkness with Love
n glorious remembrance of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Shrila Prabhupada
On this sacred day of Guru-purnima, my heart opens with deep gratitude at the lotus feet of my Spiritual Master, Shrila Prabhupada, founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness and true representative of the Bhakti tradition.
To him I owe everything: the direction of my life, the highest meaning of my existence, and the vision to cross the dark night of Kali-yuga.
Guru-purnima is the day is the anniversary on which the Guru is celebrated as a cosmic archetype and living presence: the Master as a visible manifestation of Divine Grace, the One who leads us from the darkness of ignorance, the cause of illusion, to the light of knowledge, spiritual awareness, and transcendent love.
For me, and for millions of people around the world, this indescribable mercy took form in the person of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who, with immense compassion, left his beloved Vrindavana to come to the West at the age of 69, with no means or certainties, moved solely by the desire to offer everyone the knowledge of Bhagavata-dharma: the mutual love of Radha and Krishna.
Shrila Prabhupada’s life was a perfect synthesis of erudition and humility, of determination and reliance on Shri Krishna, of spiritual strength and loving gentleness.
His teachings, rooted in the Vedas, the Puranas, and the sacred texts of bhakti, have transformed the lives of countless people—myself included— by showing us the path of seva, sadhana, bhajana, kirtana, and surrender to God.
Remembering the Guru today is not a simple gesture of devotion: it is renewing our commitment to the spiritual path, recognizing that all our progress, all our understanding, all our gestures of genuine of authentic love are made possible by the Guru’s mercy.
Shrila Prabhupada ignited within me the desire to live according to Vaishnava Dharma, to serve others with the compassion of spiritual knowledge, and to awaken love for God as the highest virtue to practice in life.
In His name, in His honor, I renew today my vow of fidelity to that path of purity and truth which is bhakti—the path He lived with unparalleled and loving dedication.
I pray to always remain in His service, in thought, word, and deed.
I pray that all my work may reflect, even in the smallest way, the splendor of His mission.
And I pray that all of us, today, may recognize the Guru in our lives as a guide, friend, and manifestation of Love.
All glories to Shrila Prabhupada!
All glories to the Masters of the Guru-paramparā!
All glories to the day of Guru-purnima!
With boundless gratitude and devotion to the Guru of my life,
Matsya Avatar das
